Common chimney problems

Chimneys take the brunt of high winds and heavy rain for many years, so issues are not uncommon. Below, we’ve listed some of the problems we can help with:

  1. Flaunching damage – Chimney flaunchings hold the pots in place and are angled so rainwater can drain off the stack. These can crack over time, letting water into your property. We can assess the condition of your chimney flaunching and deliver a lasting repair.
  2. Broken flashings – Often made from lead, flashings cover the adjoining areas of your roof and are found around the base of the chimney stack. Flashings can crack or peel away, resulting in the need for repairs or replacement flashing.
  3. Missing mortar – Brickwork needs strong mortar to remain structurally sound. Once this starts to crumble, you’ll need an expert to replace it. This type of chimney repair work is known as ‘repointing’.
  4. Missing covers / cowls – These stop rain and pests from getting inside the chimney flue, but they’re often damaged because of the weather, or missing altogether. No matter the type of chimney you have, we can replace its pots, covers and cowls.
  5. Movement / leaning – Once your chimney starts to lean, it may be too late for us to carry out simple chimney stack repairs. A leaning chimney will usually be hazardous, so in some cases it’s best to have a full chimney rebuild.

If you’re planning to remove a chimney breast inside a property for refurbishment, you should consider removing the chimney too, or at least having it properly supported.. Our experts safely remove stacks in London and the Home Counties.
