Ceiling leaks

When there are signs of water damage on a ceiling or water dripping from a ceiling, the exact source is not usually obvious. Even if there’s no water leakage and the area feels dry to the touch, it’s vital to get the problem investigated and fixed.

Water damage can cause timbers and other structural parts to become saturated, sometimes compromising their structural integrity. Not dealing with the problem quickly can result in insurance companies refusing a claim.

You should call a professional as soon as you notice signs of a leaking ceiling. We have ceiling leak experts available 24/7. The non-destructive methods they use to trace the exact source of a water leak are required by most insurance companies when processing a claim.

WATCH: Detecting the source of ceiling leaks

This video shows some of the techniques our experts use to find the source of dripping water from a ceiling or water damage.

In this example, our tradesperson investigates a water leak-damaged ceiling in a first-floor bedroom. A leak in plumbing pipes is ruled out before attention turns to the roof.

How to find a water leak

Expert investigation methods

Years of experience show that the source of a leak is often not directly above where there’s water leaking through a ceiling. This is because small amounts of water flow gradually along plumbing pipes, electrical conduits, joists, and other structural parts to the lowest point before dripping onto the ceiling below.

This is where the water collects. It can sometimes be several metres from the actual water ingress point or leak source. As it collects, it gradually absorbs into the ceiling covering. Eventually, a moisture patch and dripping water from the ceiling will appear.

Removing the ceiling section where there’s visual evidence of water damage or a ceiling leaking causes unnecessary damage. Non-destructive methods are used to identify the source of ceiling leaks and then fix the problem.

Ceiling leak insurance claims

You should act as soon as you see any of the signs below of water leaking from a ceiling. If you don’t act quickly to reduce damage from a leaking pipe, insurance companies might dispute your claim.

  • Water dripping from the ceiling
  • Moisture patch
  • Mould growth
  • Yellow or brown staining
  • Peeling or cracked paint
  • Blown plasterboard

You should move any furniture from where water from the ceiling could land and place a container there to catch the water. If there’s dripping water from the ceiling, you should stop the leak by turning off your water supply at the internal stop valve. Then, turn on sink or bath taps to drain the plumbing system.
