We understand the stress of having internal damp problems but not knowing the exact cause. The thought of having to damage walls, floors or ceilings in a vain attempt to find the source of a leak of water ingress can leave you feeling helpless and facing the prospect of a large repair bill.

Our damp and leak detection specialists use non-invasive methods. Their trace and access approach can pinpoint the source of damp without causing damage. It’s why it’s required by most insurers when processing an “escape of water” claim.

How to find a water leak

WATCH: How we detect damp sources

This video shows how a range of non-invasive methods are used to detect a hidden leak causing persistent damp to a ceiling.

Several techniques are usually used during a detailed damp investigation.

Our experts are available to find any type of hard to find leak or source of water ingress.

Ruling out condensation

Condensation is often first considered as a source of excess moisture that results in damp and mould growth. It’s true that in rooms where humidity levels are high, and where condensation forms, mould will often grow.

However, if condensation is ruled out as the cause of damp, other sources of persistent moisture should be investigated. This includes leaks in hidden plumbing, central heating, or drainage pipes and rainwater ingress through faults in building fabric and roof coverings.

You can read more on condensation in our comprehensive guide.

Insurance claim advice

If you suspect a leak or water ingress in your property, you shouldn’t ignore it. Fixing the problem can usually be covered on an insurance policy.

Water escape inside a property could be causing bigger problems than any visible signs of damp might suggest. Water damage can eventually compromise the structural integrity of a property if left unresolved. Failing to act quickly might mean your insurance company rejects your claim.
